ON WHY PUBLIC HEALTH ONTARIO IS IMPORTANT

Public Health Ontario enables scientists and researchers, like myself, to make a positive impact on public health and health care in Ontario. I am proud to be part of a collaborative team that leverages their technical and scientific expertise to improve the health on Ontarians.

Areas of Expertise

  • Genomics
  • Molecular Evolution
  • Bioinformatics
  • Phylogenetics

Appointments

  • Assistant Professor, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, University of Toronto

Academic Degrees and Accreditations

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ecology and Evolutionary Biology), University of Toronto

PHO Research Interests

  • Using genomics to detect, predict, and understand the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (drug resistance) in pathogens
  •  Understanding the transmission dynamics of pathogens in Ontario to improve public health practice
  • Using metagenomics to detect emerging or re-emerging pathogens

PHO Research Activities

  • Investigating the genomic epidemiology of Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum the causative agent of syphilis
  • Establishing a cloud computing environment for genomic epidemiology
  • Examining viral diversity to understand outbreaks and transmission networks (e.g., mpox, influenza, RSV, SARS-CoV-2)
  • Implementing novel genomic and bioinformatics solutions for pathogen genomics in Ontario
